From photography to optical lenses, Nikon has developed a long, proud history in high-precision optics. 1946 is the year that marks Nikon’s very first entry into the optical market.
1917
FOUNDATION
Domestic production of optical instruments and original manufacturing of optical glass.
Two of Japan’s leading optical manufacturers merged with the help of capital investment from Koyata Iwasaki, the President of Mitsubishi, to form a comprehensive, fully integrated optical company known as Nippon Kogaku K.K.

1983
HCC COATING
Nikon introduces the first anti-refection coating with built-in scratch resistance.
Nikon introduces the first anti-reflection coating with built-in scratch resistance. This technology immediately becomes popular in Japan, where now nearly all lenses feature this type of coating. The coating uses nano technology, used for camera lenses – an ultra high performance treatment that effectively reduces unwanted reflections in cameras.
